A fresh political row broke out in the national capital on Saturday (April 13, 2025) after opposition leader Atishi accused Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s husband of attending an official meeting attended by top officials of MCD, DJB, PWD and DUSIB. Responding to this, Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva accused Atish of making “insulting” remarks.

Atishi shared a picture on X, claiming that the Delhi government is being run by the chief minister’s husband and compared the situation to what is commonly seen in rural areas. “Take a close look at this picture. The person chairing the meeting of MCD, DJB, PWD and DUSIB officials is none other than Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s husband,” Atishi said in the post.

“We used to hear that if a woman head is elected in a village, then all government work is handled by her husband…but this is surely the first time in Indian history that a woman is elected chief minister and all government work is handled by her husband,” she added.

Atishi also questioned whether frequent power cuts and rising private school fees were linked to her husband’s role in the government. Sachdeva responded: “Atishi is a woman herself, it is surprising that you insult another female leader. Rekha Gupta rose all the way from secretary of Delhi Social Security Department to chief minister of Delhi.

It was neither illegal nor moral for her husband to support her.” Sachdeva also pointed out some examples of spouses of AAP leaders participating in political affairs, including Sunita Kejriwal, wife of Arvind Kejriwal, addressing the public at the chief minister’s office after Kejriwal’s arrest. “Isn’t this an insult to democracy?” Mr Sachdeva asked.
